Overall this exceeded my expectations, which were very low following the 2016 mess. Is it better than that? Yes. Is it the sequel we wanted. No because we don’t need any more cash grabs for this franchise. This movie is sorta on the right path and hits some of the right marks but ultimately does not deliver.
Pros: No overdone CGI, effects that resemble original movies in a fun and campy way, doesn’t take itself too seriously, no politics crammed in, fun to a point that falls short, overall decent performances from all actors (Paul Rudd plays Paul Rudd), great shots and some nostalgic moments.
Meh: Plot was interesting at times but not well fleshed out, ending rushed. The entire plot feels like it just dropped out of nowhere, suddenly there’s this thing in this podunk town and it matters a lot all of a sudden. Why? What is this and why was it built there? What was the point of the one in NYC? If you don’t want people stopping you, built it literally anywhere people can’t access.
Cons: WAY too long. Decent scenes dispersed in between long sequences of filler. Dialogue didn’t actually explain much and newer audiences will be left scratching their heads. As a fan I was confused at times. Egon’s ghost in the end was cringey. Not much character development. Cameos that feel forced. Occurrences and magic that are never explained.
I’ll probably watch it again but it’s not engaging enough for repeat views way into the future. The main problem is that it DRAGS. Could have been a 90 minute movie easily.
