Dull, dull, dull, bleak, turgid and drab every respect. It could only have been more gloomy if it was set in a Soviet era Siberian Gulag. Cheap and nasty production and the most convincing actor and the most empathetic character was the rearing horse in episode one. Frankly I was relieved when George was skewered....I was so bored last night I fell asleep before the end and still didn’t miss anything. We really didn’t need a ‘woke’ adaptation of HG Wells classic. Thanks for nothing and wasting 3 hours of my life BBC. I only continued to watch after episode 1 as I was convinced it had to get better but it just got MUCH MUCH worse. If you turn on the TV to watch this on demand, don’t.....it’s a waste of electricity.

I don’t normally write reviews......I was looking forward to this adaptation but......I found it awful. Tedious adaptation of Hugo’s epic work. Most of the major characters horribly miscast and most of the minor characters seem to drift aimlessly in and out of the storyline......little or no character development, the result of which was that by the end of episode 3, having read the novel (not seen the musical....Hugo with songs...seriously????) i was more concerned by the fact that the BBC had murdered Hugo’s work rather than the demise of the characters. Not a patch on the BBCs adaptation of War and Peace, but then I have always believed that Hugo as an author wasn’t a patch on Tolstoy. Marks out of 10.....3.5
