Thrilling plot and well-developed characters. Every musical number is performed expertly, and the catchy songs leave a great impression on even the most critical viewer. Each Munk has grown from their role in the previous film in a way that is expressed clearly and feels organic. Themes of bullying and coming of age are handled with finesse. The stories of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore along with their new guardian Toby highlight the struggles of today’s youth and shows viewers the importance of family and friendship in facing the tumultuous trials of high school. The Chipmunks’ romances with the Chipettes are heartwarming and wholesome, and serve to further develop the Chipmunks’ already excellent characters. A masterclass in cinema; for a movie about chipmunks, it’s touchingly human.
