I find myself unexpectedly, but delightfully, impressed with the series. I am a big fan of both the books and games and my bar for this to be a success is high.
I think Netflix has done an excellent job. The casting is great and the character portrayal and development is excellent. The combat is also very good. There even seem to be a few moves from Gerald that echo the finishing moves from the games.
If you’re not already familiar with the books and/or games, this may seem like a poor mans GoT, but that’s doing a disservice to the Witcher world. It isn’t trying to be GoT and shouldn’t be judged as such. Try to enjoy it without comparing it.
The writers have stuck well to the source material and as one familiar with the world and lore of the Witcher, I find it extremely watchable and not at all jarring. There are no thoughts of ‘that’s not right’ or ‘I can’t believe they changed such-and-such’ as was the case for me with, eg, the Lord of the Rings films.
I hope that the overall reception is as positive as I feel this effort deserves it to be.
I’m on a rewatch now. It has me hooked and I really hope Netflix go for at least one more season, if not several.
