Ann Marie MacDonald's book The Way the Crow Flies is one of my favourite books of all time. There are many reasons to read it; it's beautifully written, it is a captivating story; it is a fictionalized re-telling of the Steven Truscott case with an added dash of history, colonization and racism. Most of all, it captures a time and place that existed before I was born that I never understood. The 50's ideals of hope, faith, belonging, doing the right thing, believing that there was a right thing to do, trusting authority, love, loyalty, caring for all of humanity and doing your part to contribute to a bright future for your children - I love this fairy tale and until I read this book I never understood why people believed in it back then. I am the product of cynicism, doubt, and eye rolling. Ann Marie made me touch base with the innocence and hope of the era, even while darkness prevailed. Thank you for writing this book. I just re-read it for the first time in many years and appreciated everything about it anew <3
