I was excited for this film. Especially because it has incredible talent: Washington, Malek, and Leto. Who's careers I have watched for years and love each of their work as dedicated actors. So this was surely going to be a slam dunk. I'm not like some who watch and pick a movie and start to tear it apart in the very opening credits.
I like to watch the entire movie and then sit back and review what I just experienced. So that being said I fell in love with the look and style of the movie, which of course made me think immediately of one of my favorite movies "Seven". Loved the production value and look of the time period it was set. My only issue was the script. So much more could have been done. It needed more eyes on it to really take it somewhere. Now our three leads each are brilliant with working with what they had, but the only time I got excited was waiting for scenes which they were together.
I found Washington and Leto to be the most believable in their roles. Melek gives a noteworthy performance but for all his talent, the script flatlines and makes his character typical and one we've seen over and over. And the cast includes some great supporting characters, who start off great, who aren't given enough meat in the script to be interesting. Then that ending. It could have been EPIC - but to pun a phrase - we weren't given enough "little things" through the plot to get us there as an audience.
