Kaaval is not the yester year SG returning with his glory. But as Thamban, Suresh Gopi delivers a measured and astute performance. He trods but his steps are measured. He raises his voice, but his tempo is steady. He is angry but his fury is restrained. He jokes but it is a crafty remark.
Kaaval is a measured movie, one that actually goes deep into the performance of an actor tempered by time.
Think of the your living room sofa, everytime you lounge yourself on the timber sofa in your living room, you realise the grandiose, the comfort, the pride, strength and glory in such a piece.
Suresh Gopi dons the role of a master patriarch in this movie and the director has made himself very clear while trying to define this character that Suresh Gopi is also the protector to Malayalam movie, who is never really there but always there in the background.
The tempo in which the movie progresses makes us realise that Mollywood hasn't lost its old world charm. It is that very factor which has endeared us to those old movies. While this is done, we also realise that Kaaval is a transition or a walkthrough into the new world, where the new and the old freely intermingle.
I sincerely hope that fans of SG and maybe even movie lovers don't expect that the retro SG can be reprised.
The new SG is time personified, a man who is in so much control of his rage, anger, passion and emotions.
Peace and love
