I should really sleep on it, but I just walked out of the cinema and need to offer my ramblings in an effort to determine whether I liked or loathed what I just saw.. The point of the film was to have no point. It was true to the ideology of the joker. Chaos, madness, meaningless. It wanted to be ugly, grim and have the audience feel confused. There was never a redeeming moment, but a steady descent into bland soulessness. For the fact that the director deliberately put together this film to irk the viewer and leave them feeling black and depleted, I gave it more than 1 star. The music and the presence of lady gaga or whatever his name is added nothing. The music was bland and tiresome, again achieving is purpose to be the polar opposite of what a movie should be. The repeated lyric, "this is entertainment" an irony to slap the poor viewer in the face who paid his ticket and gave his time to see this anti entertainment. It's like the pyschopathic personality of the joker wrote the film and was so grim that he even betrays himself, essentially making it a non event. It tries to be a artpiece rather than a movie. Be prepared, lower your expectations. I sat through it.. Just. It was horrible, but because I think deliberately so, I give it a 2. It's like staring at a pollock painting for 2 hours. It's a mess, it doesn't change, it isn't pretty and it has no meaning. And then it ends. After sleeping on it, I think this film has played out in my mind and is quite memorable. It's a tragedy.

If it weren't for Billy Murray, this wouldn't register a star. Although I'm happy to see a film that doesn't involve adultery, Rashida Jones was about as exciting as my grandfather recounting how he won bingo.. Number by number. Production didn't manage to create any convincing connection between characters, it was almost filled with uncomfortable silences and Rashidas script was as dull and boring as one could get. Great for Bill Murray, who got to leverage his acting and humor from his bland surroundings. Ultimately, the plot really went full circle and ending with a pointless story.

As others have already written, the true story of this account was a natural no brainier for a creepy movie.. Provided the director resisted going Hollywood on it and turning it into a ridiculous horror movie that loses its punch as soon as it goes away from factual accounts. Unfortunately, it did. It discredited the wonderful build up with unrealistic, exaggerated demonic effects and a mother exorcizing her own kid, back at her house. Ridiculous. The true story of the priest performing the exorcism on three occasions would have been compelling. Subtle indications of a demonic presence would have had greater impact v going full blown monster. Acting was spot on and still, I kept watching. Just a little disappointed that Hollywood trumped the reality and we didn't get to see a recreation of the real events and how they unfolded.

Rare to give 5 stars for me, but this film was flawless. Beautifully shot, convincing and compelling lead actress playing Cabrini and a story of ruthless perseverance on behalf of the poor, in the name of love. A refreshing film that runs against the tide of the dark trash and moral manipulation coming out of mainstream Hollywood. I appreciate the film covered the hardships and plight of Italian immigrants when they first arrived in New York. Was super impressed with the quality of production, the cinematography was superb. Great film.
