If you dont like musicals you can still appreciate the cinematography, themes, visual art, and songs you probably already know but didn't know were from West Side Story. It's the best musical ever done in my opinion and that's pretty incredible considering it's getting close to 70 years old. Visually stunning and abstract like nothing you have ever seen on a screen before, the director has somehow managed to work abstract art and musical numbers into the storytelling and with the purposes of being able to discuss and depict taboo subjects for media in the 60s. Named my childhood cats Tony and Chino because of this movie, and will adore it to the day I die. Only thing I dont love is because of the brown face but I also understand this movie is from the 60s so people weren't aware about that not being ok, and they do seem to have tried to get as many legitimate Latinos in the film as possible, something that would have been difficult due to requiring ballet proficiency, dance experience and also being able to act and sing. Understandably a tall bill for casting and at a time where there were a lot less Latinos in America. I Think considering the themes of the movie and messages if it were made today they would absolutely avoid that but it's not something we can undo now.
