Firstly, the transfer to print of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret(2023)
is stunning. I did not expect it to look this good. Such clarity.
Secondly, I found parts of this film endearing, and in other parts, I felt the frustration and worry Margaret/Abby Ryder Fortson was feeling when she asked her mother Sylvia Simon/Rachel McAdams about getting a bra.
The following scene is with both of them going to a store to pick one out.
The sales associate says after Margaret's measurement that she didn't really need one, there's a slight tension in Margaret, and then please be kind look from the mother to the associate. Then the associate suggests one that Margaret could grow into. In the following scene, the girls club meeting where three out of the for getting the same grow-into bra as Margaret, and the relief and laughter of the moment.
That right there is what many of the scenes are like.
It's a comedy coming-of-age drama.
There's a scene where Margaret notices the beginning growth of a boy she likes underarm hair There's a short shot of leg hair.
Why, well do you remember? I do.
Heck, when I first noticed my underarm hair I told my mother I needed to get my own Brute underarm deodorant. I actually went and showed some of my friends. And yes, the first beginning of that fine blonde hair forming above my lip. Staring at it every day in the mirror to see if it grew more.
I finally showed my stepfather and he gave a warm-hearted chuckle, "Well I guess we'll have to get you a special razor for all that hair".
That was a tacit moment where the boy he helped raise was becoming a young man. I felt safe and loved.
A setback for me was because of the wonderful clarity. The 70's props were too vivid. Because of that, the vibe the movie was going for didn't generate the nostalgic atmosphere I was hoping for.
I had friends that were married and had children in a similar situation.
They chose to celebrate both Jewish and Christian holidays. How are you supposed to choose if you don't know what there are? That's what their thinking was. It's not a knock on the book or film.
As always, Kathy Bates/Slyvia Simon, the grandmother was wonderful.
All that big rhinestone jewelry, I loved it. Ya know I could almost smell Vanilla Fields
One thought I had while watching Are You There God? It's me Margaret was, if a husband lost his wife and had a daughter that was twelve, this would be a great movie for them to see.
Another great heartwarming comedy-drama that is good is an A24 film Eight Grade. It's not completely the same, but it is a good movie that many don't know about.
I enjoyed this film.
