My parents and I started watching this show with the impression that it was some kind of Star Trek parody. We have been delightfully surprised that it is much more. Frankly, I was never a big fan of Seth Macfarlane. I certainly didn't know, personally, that he was such a good writer.
This show does poke fun at its own origins, with similarities and characters reminiscent of Spock, Warf and Data. But it isn't tired in any way, and introduces its own characters, and world building rules. This show deserves attention. There was an episode in the first season where a persons fate was decided by likes and dislikes - it was very Twilight Zone -y and a very good episode. It was also very scary in that it felt very familiar to current real life.
I sit with my mom in the living room on my phone each night as she watches Star Trek TOS. The Orville is much more of an homage to the show, than a parody of it. If anything, now we know (or I should say I know) that Seth is a HUGE trekky!
