As with many science fiction screen portrayals, this is an interpretation.
The director, Dennis Villeneueve, of the recent 2 part movie has panned this prequel claiming the 2 leads, Princess Inez and her lover have no chemistry. I don't see them as the 2 leads.
I see Emily Watson and Olivia Williams as the 2 leads. They are neither heroes or villians which are interesting roles for women. The ambiguity of their roles for middle aged female actors makes this series both unique and interesting.
This series is about the origin story of the Bene Gesserit. Yet the reviewers, many male, don"t get this. There are nuances in the strong female performances that many of these guy reviewers miss. Maybe it is because the Sci Fy world is male centric.
I am remembing an interview with Frank Herbert when he was asked about the Bene Gesserit narrative arc in his Dune series. He said he created the characters in honor of his wife who he considered more powerful and influential than men in many things.
I am enjoying the series. Yes, one can pick it apart, but it is a fantasy adaptation of a complex universe. Yet, my tastes are different than what many have written. Maybe it is due to my preffering Dune 1984 to the recent two part movie Dune 1 and 2.
I like the visuals, costuming, actors and the acting of Dune 1984. Yes it is campy, but much more fun.
So I recommend that folks give Dune: Prophecy a chance. Just sit back and enjoy it and realize that the women in this are more equal players than the GOT universe. I find that refreshing.
