The acting was good, but the storyline is weak.
As I kept watching the movie I could see the movie making attempts in trying to touch a touchy subject. I get it. Dowries are bad and in this day age should be banned, but this movie had so much potential to do better and missed so many other marks.
Perhaps, the director just wanted to focus on one issue, but it would have been nice to see the movie make a point that our female lead does not need a man to travel or even settle abroad. I understand the brown culture, but there really should be an emphasis that marriage is not the equivalent of earning happiness.
Furthermore, let's talk about fat shaming. I'm so tired of movies depicting the only quality people of larger size have is eating and that they are ugly. It may seem funny, but it isn't. The movie actually goes into describing how he has no options, but to marry the fat girl. Disappointing. Toxic.
Do you know what made me laugh? When the male lead was mad at the female lead because she wanted to use him to go to Dubai, yet he wanted to use her for sex. He was ready to marry anyone as long as he finally loses his v-card.-Even the "fat girl," so def not actually in love with the female lead.
Let's move on to the abuse our main male lead puts on his brother. I guess this was an attempt of humor, but it seemed more like the director crossed a line. Ironically, this was foreshadowing the moment he slapped the main female lead. The main female lead does not accept this and I'm so proud of her for leaving on the spot, but as soon as she goes to her family's home she gets told by her father she can't come back to save reputation. Blah blah blah. Because Patrichary and of course the father doesn't understand abuse, because he probably never suffered from it. She eventually goes back to her husband's family, but of course, she can't warm up to abusive male lead. Sure, he slapped her once, but even once is unforgivable. You can see how both families push her to go back to save their reputation (#toxicbrownculture) and even when the male lead leaves for Dubai our female lead is being blamed because she wouldn't forgive him.
Overall, the humor has failed.
