Extremely underwhelming. It’s sad but in a lukewarm way. I found the plots & characters to be really cliché. The actors were really good but even their performances could not make up for the lack of any kind of development.
Spoilers:
Everything was super cliché. The unnecessary rape & murder by a group of bad boys, the woman leaving the man she loves for a hot businessman, her rich & evil mother that she hates, the sheriff disobeying the law “for justice” in his random southwestern town. This movie brought nothing new to the table whatsoever.
We can also understand that the woman is an artist without the need for her bland wardrobe adorned with chunky, colorful glasses. The scenes where she interacted with her staff & her colleagues were so awful, I honestly couldn’t tell if it was satire. If it was satire, I don’t think I would have had to question it so much just because it was so bad.
The ending was extremely mild for a story that tried so hard to be intense. The fictional husband accidentally killing himself made his already weak & unlikeable character even worse. As for the woman being stood up on her date, I really have no idea what that was supposed to make me feel. If it was supposed to suggest growth for her “weak” ex-husband, we really never saw his character being weak other than when people described him as such. The petty act of him standing her up isn’t strong enough for the viewer to believe, “wow, he has grown enough courage to seek revenge.” Both the fictional novel & the movie had very lame endings.
There were a handful of nice shots, but it was clear that the movie tried to be much more than it actually is.
