TL/DR: Great start for Hasbro by bringing the series back to its roots with heavy use of physical effects, but they are also trying something different with the idea of Morph-X and animal DNA splicing. Thankfully, the Big Baddie fails over and over, Power Rangers have teenage problems, comic relief is in the form of a duo, and there's cool weapons and Morphers that look exactly like the toys. You did good Hasbro.
The Long:
I am part of the inaugural generation of Power Rangers. The absolute best part of the Power Rangers phenomenon was role-playing with your best friends as your favorite character. This consisted of mimicking the morphing motions, pretending various objects were signature Power Ranger weapons, and if you were extremely lucky, actually playing with the licensed toys.
Hasbro is taking this opportunity of having the rights to one of the greatest children franchises and making the most of it. They have taken this series back to its roots by adding more physical effects and making the merchandise identical to what is used in the show. There are liberties taken in plot and setting like the idea of Morph-X being a universal commodity and a new clean source of energy. I understand that stagnation is something to avoid in any imaginative universe, but the idea of splicing animal DNA into teenagers and injecting them with Morph-X to create super soldiers might be going a bit far. I enjoyed the idea of a mystical power flowing throughout the universe.
Above average acting by most of the young cast, feels like they really bought into their characters. The supporting cast of adults is lacking talent, but that just makes you focus more on the younger actors in-scene.
Overall, a fun, nostalgic watch for adult fans. For the younger fans, there's cool gadgets, attractive cast to crush on, and underlying family values. Did I forget to mention the toys? Well that's the whole reason Hasbro does anything, really. Keep up the good work, Allspark Pictures.
