So, my friend wanted me to read this book. At first I thought it had potential, but it never lived up to the hype for me. So I will list out a few reasons for you:
1. The characters
Sophie - she is a Mary Sue. she is constantly doubting herself and talking about how flawed she is it gets annoying. I also think she just has too many powers…it makes her character so unrelatable. And in the very first book a bunch of guys that are way older than her ALL LIKE HER. But, she’s just so humble and kind that she’s somehow still insecure about being a freak. She’s also a bad friend to Dex, Biana, and Mirella. She also very suspiciously looks like the author…
Keefe - he’s “popular”. I mean really? He always skips class for weird reasons like sleeping on a bench and random things like that. Also all the major fans of this series NEVER STOP talking about him and I think a lot of people only like the series for the characters.
Fitz - he’s too perfect and has no personality. It seemed like the author wanted to make him perfect but then realized he was too perfect and threw in some anger issues. Also…does the author have a crush on him??
The characters are two dimensional and not complex in any way, AND there is no character development at all!! They seem like they’re based on stereotypes. It’s also not very diverse…they’re mostly white.
2. The elf world
It just doesn’t make sense to me…like if everyone is given limitless money at their birth, wouldn’t money loose it’s value?
The slave-sorry, gnome thing doesn’t sit right with me. They are actually described as being dark-skinned. They say that the gnomes like the work, but you know who else used that excuse? Actual slave owners.
Their powers don’t make sense to me. When Fitz is explaining it to Sophie he says that it’s not magic or science it’s just the way the world works. But science explains how the world works…so how is it not science?
I also get the feeling that Shannon messenger doesn’t have a photographic memory…the way she explains Sophie’s isn’t accurate.
Why does everyone have to be blue-eyed hot people? It goes along with the trope that good guys have to be attractive. There is also one point when Sophie goes so far to say she is surprised that someone so attractive could be bad. There’s no point. Also, why do they have to be so racist towards humans? It makes the characters even more unlikable than they already are.
3. It was unoriginal
I didn’t like how she changed the meaning of the quote “all who wander are not lost” and how she decided to say JRR Tolkien met HER elves.
This series also lacks anything original. Everything seems “inspired” by Harry Potter. Think about it. An alchemy (potions) teacher at foxfire (Hogwarts) that hates Sophie (Harry). A mean class mate named Stina (Malfoy) who hates Sophie (Harry) and is influenced by their parents. Not knowing their biological parents. The dizznees (Weaslys), A big family who stina (Malfoy) considers below herself for being of lower class. The neverseen (death eaters) and the black swan (order of the phoenix). There’s so many more.
4. The messy, confusing, all over-the-place plot
I can’t even begin to explain this one
Sorry this was so long and thanks for reading. You might enjoy this book…but I didn’t.
