Go and see this classic farce from the pen of Oscar Wilde. It is set against the backdrop of Victorian aristocracy in a love tryst involving brothers Jack and Algernon, as they both try to assume the name Earnest ("Earnest by name, Earnest by nature"! )Their suitors two ladies of nobility who are really in love with the name Earnest, search for a fiance bearing the attributes of one with such a name. What ensues is such a cleverly worked comedy, farcical in the content of the couples encounters. The men having their fakeness eventually exposed, as the inevitable happens and they're trickery is so embarrassingly discovered, but all has a happy ending, as the two males realise they are actually blood brothers, Jack's name actually being Earnest and he lamenting that he had actually been honest in proporting to bear that name. His lying in the hope of winning the affections of his beloved Gwendoline had all been unnecessary, he seemed frustrated that his evil attempts had turned out for the good.
I was thoroughly entertained seeing this famous Oscar Wilde comedy farce. It had a bit of everything drama, farce, slapstick, and all this against the back drop of Victorian aristocracy and its conventions.
A must see, hurry up, ends its run at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester on 20th July. You won't be disappointed.
