Although far from perfect in terms of story telling; a plane being hijacked that happens to have a vampire on board, does not really bring anything new to the table. Like many other movies that involve a hijacking, this subplot is clearly only used to provide a setting for our main characters, however because Blood Red Sky focuses less on that and deals more on the characters, specifically the mother's struggle upon having to care for her son, deal with her vampiric urges and the situation she's now dealt, the film highlights the more interesting elements of the story and not drag itself out and make everything too muddled.
The best part of the movie has to be the horror elements, as I've mentioned before. Because it focuses less on the hijacking, the horror aspect is less of an accessory, in contrast to the snakes of snakes on a plane, where they are only there to further enhance the direness of the situation; Blood Red Sky makes it clear that the vampires are the real threat in this situation.
For a while now, vampires have not really made a comeback since the dawn of sparkly hot vampires brought on by the Twilight craze back in the late 2000's, effectively weakening the public's perception of vampires as fearsome creatures of the night. Blood Red Sky, although may not necessarily be the vampire film that will reignite the next vampire craze of the century, is a refreshing return to form vampires have desperately needed to fully display how truly menacing these blood suckers can be; so if you've been craving for a good ol' vampire flick, the like of the lost boys, 30 days of night, or from dusk till dawn; this might just satiate those bloody gory vampiric cravings you've been looking for, albeit only for a bit. I give it a 3.5/ 5
