I was attracted to this movie because of Daniel Clowes, who was behind "Ghost World". Indie comic book guy.
Although the story is a bit corny, and definitely bizarre, I was expecting to be disturbed anyway because of Clowes.
But the real jewel that makes this movie is the fantastic performances by Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. These two actors have been around a long time and are brilliant, but somehow this script really just made them shine.
As Wilson, Harrelson is a naiive trusting and loving man. He forgives all faults and starts conversations with strangers, although they don't want him to.
This part of the movie I found interesting. Whenever someone tries to start a conversation out of the blue people are just afraid. I wonder if this is hostility to our fellow people, to not just want to be friendly to a stranger. It's even commanded by the government-- social distancing. It's almost expected that people isolate themselves.
And Laura Dern is just fantastically crazy.
I thought it was good, although I don't know how someone who is adopted feels about the movie, I had loving parents. Although they're a bit like Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern anyway.
