i cannot stress how bad this is. everybody who reviews this gives it “props” because they don’t want to sound offensive and condescending, yet they can’t even point out the obvious flaws. this show has poking holes: the characters. netflix acts so inclusive, but it lowers the plot and moral values with these unrelatable and not funny sub-plot inputs. it points at the message of the latino and latina community being oppressed by the modern and villainous people. but it tries too hard. the characters are laughable and the acting is so flawed. they don’t emit expression or emotion and when they do, it’s either shouting or crying, which are meager ways to express opinions. and the acting in the children. it lowers the tension. and the scenes where the emotion shines, it’s flattened. but i can give props to the performances of some of the actors; most of which are veterans of acting, and they are the powerhouse of this show. also the details are so noticeably bad. sometimes BIG things don’t match up. the mural that fuels the message of racial and all-gender love is what i applaud, but it’s message is already torn apart. these characters “don’t like the rich hipsters” but they hang up memes in their restaurant and one of the characters has an iphone x. the iphone x is what really bugs me. not because i hate apple. it’s because this family is portrayed as restaurant owners about to lose everything and can’t pay their rent. but this 1000 dollar thing is just put into the show without thought. and the characters flaunt gems of their labor, but there’s no context of that labor: no reason behind that expensive thing. and the camera movements. it’s shot poorly, most of the scenes going : cut, cut, cut. it doesn’t add anything new to the mix. there’s no slow pans from one character to the other. there’s a scene where i wanted the camera to shift instead of cut and it would’ve added so much depth and character to the scene. you can’t understand these characters because of the constant change of them. and change is very rough and can shift someone very shortly, but when u go from “i support this so much” to “i hate this” is very condescending and it’s not explained at all. this show is just a good pr for netflix and something reviewers can’t criticize. but ig i jus did. 10/10
