A fun watch...if it wasn't called Monster Hunter.
Pros:
- Monsters looked absolutely fantastic.
- Plenty of action
- Casting (Excluding Ron Pearlman as 'The Admiral')
- Palico Chef
Cons:
- Horrifically paced - It felt like I was watching it at 2x speed. The progression (If you want to call it that) was far too quick.
- Way too many cuts in the action scenes. The whole film felt like an extended trailer.
- None of the characters (even our main) had any depth to them at all.
- Almost plotless. The ONLY storyline is that they need to destroy the tower that's causing the portals. There's no sub story, side story or even a 5 minute off track adventure.
- Emotionless. There is no build up to scenes where we are clearly supposed to feel something, whether it be empathy or excitement. They throw things in as a matter of fact, and they end as quickly as they appeared.
- Lack of material usage. There are countless Monsters they could have used. Countless nods to the source they have made. We got 5 different monsters in total. 3 of which (Diablos, Nerscyclla, Rathalos) were the main threats. 1 (Apceros) a zero threat herbivore. And finally the last monster (Gore Magala) which we got approximately 5 seconds worth of screen time before that disgusting credit roll.
- Ending. As if the far too fast paced 1 hour and 40 minutes wasn't bad enough. We get an absolutely, out of nowhere, nonsensical credit roll.
Summary:
CGI was amazing. The chemistry between Artemis and the Hunter was great. The action, for all was heavily cut, was still really satisfying.
Other than those points, a massive let down to the game fans. Felt empty and extremely rushed. It felt like Anderson just wanted to hurry you up to the credits.
