The "moral" of this story seems to be that the world is unjust and unfair, but don't do anything to stop the status quo. It's sad because this had the potential to be so much better than it was.
At one point, one of the main character's asks, "What if this is real and has been happening forever? Families have been choosing to sacrifice to save the world over and over again..."
What exactly are they "saving"? "Civilized" society today is rampant with homelessness, starvation, and violence, *as it has always been*.
The real justice would have been to let the world end.
