For such an expensive sci-fi movie, the director had enough integrity to stick to his vision and not Star Warsify the story line and pace. There is an ominous, moody feel throughout this first half. The movie keeps the focus on the characters, especially the inner journey of the protagonist throughout. The actors are all excellent. Every frame is lush and looks striking, especially on the largest theater screens. The pace may feel slow, but it is a beautiful vibe. The soundtrack feels alien and mesmerizing. The costumes, the spaceship and vehicle designs are original and not derivative of past sci-fi movies. Looking forward to the sequel.

My absolute favorite anime in my college days. The setting, the characters, the individual episodes are unforgettable. The genre of each episode can vary wildly from silly slapstick comedy to serious crime drama, blaxploitation films, film noir, horror and sci-fi and everything in between. And none of them feel out of place b/c of the strength of the cast of characters and the pathos the animators and voice actors are able to bring. And as everyone will attest, the music in each episode is perfect and on par with the animation. I am revisiting the series now after 15 years probably. Still great fun!
