I really loved it. I thought the situation that JD found himself in growing up presented a lot of trauma for him that he was able to somehow navigate to his advantage eventually
It’s a story of how your first family can really mould and influence you and how sometimes the ones who love you can do unintentional damage. The fact that he had a strong ally in his grandma and also had his own ability to ‘see’ his family from the outside and then choose to have the self discipline to break away and create a different outcome for himself was admirable
I read the book in 2016 and felt it was more nuanced than the movie however Amy Adams and Glenn Close were great I thought. Definitely worth a watch. There are so many families struggling like this family every day. That is reality. To break from family dysfunction and achieve is to be applauded
