A great concept, could've easily been another great adaptation of the so cherished book. The aesthetic was amicable, the alternate reality proved agreeable but alas the acting was bad, the screenwriting just seemed lazy, the dialogues weren't interesting and most of all succeeded in making Jo really hateable.
Jo March is clearly not an easy character, her portrayal requires a deep understanding of her doings, her choices, her beliefs and her feelings; which is what makes her such a relatable and adored protagonist. Jo in the film was very ungrounded and superficially portrayed, it's upsetting to say Sarah seemed so pretentious and cringey the entire time. I couldn't help but rewrite everything in my mind while watching it.
Clichés may seem undesirable but it can be used to create something analogous and corresponding to real life. The film's attempt to make Jo unique simply came off as a standoffish, egotistical and a very high strung 'teenager'.
My other complaints include how the rest of the characters did the complete opposite, no remarkable impression, I couldn't even recognize anyone until about halfway; no chemistry between Laurie and Jo, or Amy, there was almost NO character development, and how Jo and Amy came into terms with Laurie and Amy's relationship???
I know it's just a film, just another modern adaptation, but honestly it hurts me to see how they've so easily trivialized one of my favorite books and characters.
