Intriguing concept but execution is mediocre. Writing is oftentimes boring and uninteresting, spending pages describing details that ultimately contribute nothing to the book while important plot events are presented as if they mean nothing at all. Characters are unlikeable and so blatantly abused as plot devices it's hard to look at them as actual characters. It's understandable that a key component of the book is to show the evil in humans but at the same time it needs to be presented well enough for someone to want to read it.

If you don't put in the effort to understand the underlying messages and themes this book has to offer, you won't like it. It can be really slow, boring, and you probably won't enjoy it if you're reading it for the sake of a school assignment. However, if you do some deeper analysis, this book can transform from some repetitive mess of nothing to one of the most eye-opening and fascinating coming of age novels of all time.
