I'm not a fan of romantic films but this is an instant favourite movie for me, with the absence of a big publisher Ayoade is able to experiment with risky ideas and themes that make this movie seem authentic as it distances itself from the typical rom-com format. This is also without a shadow of a doubt the most accurate depiction of teenagers I have ever seen in TV/Cinema and it's amazing how anyone can find a little bit of themselves in the characters.
One thing that was special to me is that I recognise most of the filming locations, something I wasn't expecting going in but it makes me realise how mediocre and unromantic these spots are, not only does that add to the authenticity but it also helps to show how the relationship between Oliver and Jordana isn't plastic and forced like most Rom-Coms, Since it doesn't need some romantic setting to feel genuine.
My favourite part of the movie is the eccentric style of camera work and editing to show that this is clearly from the video log-like perspective of Oliver which helps the audience connect with him and see the story through his eyes.
This, like many indie movies is a hidden gem and an absolute must see for anyone in my opinion.
