Subtle and compelling - cinema as it should be. The performances from the actors playing the Burbank brothers are somewhat against type, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing an aggressive, screwed-up Phil, and Jesse Plemons - who frequently plays creepy psychopaths - playing the subdued and kind, if rather weak, George. Plemons’ real-life partner Kirsten Dunst is quietly powerful in her role as Rose Gordon. The film is beautiful to look at, understated both visually and dramatically but all the more powerful because of this.
