For me, trying to bring alive the horrors of the past can't include including yourself, a present-day writer, in the persecuted ("us" and "we") because that makes me your murderous, unscrupulous oppressor. I wasn't born then. I had no influence on how anyone behaved in the nineteenth century. It's a plea/play/ploy for empathy and understanding, but today's readers don't have the mindset of people who lived it. I prefer historical research and gaining an understanding of events that were so critical and momentous to all who lived them. For that reason, I stopped reading in the prologue.
