This is where it all started, the first open world game that made you feel like the star of a movie. (as opposed to just a player)
First off let me say the game looks great and has the very modern appeal to it that was promised. The story is mostly untouched, save for a little teak here and there to give it a polish but i do miss the original cast and was immediately thrown for a loop once i heard Salieri speak. if you're a fan of the original cast prepare to be upset. Tommy also seems to be less of the softy that he was portrayed as in the original 2002 version. (A guilt ridden mafioso, he is no more) Instead he now seems to be, colder.
The games biggest flaw is it's "hand holding" but i suppose that is the way of modern gaming, where every item you need flashes and your direction is always marked with an arrow. Still annoying and breaks the immersion. The city is too clean, it looks like it was built hours before you got there and some of the details of the first game are gone, such as Ralph showing you how to break into cars at the beginning of each mission, also Luca's side mission's seem to be missing and a few other small details such as side conversations with Vincenzo and weapon selections are different. Also, chase missions are plagued by cut-scenes.
I'm not going to go into the dated engine they chose to use for this game, as the shooting is still more polished than the 2002 version, so all that really matters is the story of betrayal that caught me off guard the first time i beat the game, nearly two decades ago.
All in all, I recommend the game with a warning to players of the original. This game was not made by illusion softworks, rather it is made by Hangar 13 and plays mostly like mafia 3. I could only give it three stars because it ditched the original cast. Still I'm glad to have it in my collection and if you loved the story you should add it to your collection as well.
