Not the best serial killer film since Silence of the Lambs (excuse me? What about Zodiac and Se7en?), not the best horror film since Hereditary, but I still really enjoyed it, and I'll go ahead and say it was the best horror film since Talk To Me (which I loved).
I loved the atmosphere of this film. Although not quite on the level of Kurosawa's Cure in terms of atmosphere, I thought the unease, dread, and discomfort was pretty great, especially along with the fantastic cinematography which enhances it even further. Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage are really good here, with Cage being pretty damn creepy and unnerving, it's truly a gonzo performance. He really is a gross guy here. Oz Perkins has a clear sense of direction here, and the film is both taut and a nice slow-burn that isn't too long or over stays it's welcome.
I wish the ending was better though. Not a bad ending, but not a very good ending either. It's a "meh" ending, feels too off and weak-ish, but I loved what was going on before. Also, some of the CGI blood bothered me. Wish some of the violence looked a bit less fake. I don't need crazy, goopy, gratuitous practical effects, I just wish that CGI was less noticeable. Also, it's not quite as scary as the marketing says, but the dread, unease, and Cage's wild performance was scary enough for me! Just not SUPER harrowing, but the scariness I think IS there.
I had a really good time, but not a "perfect" or "masterpiece" time. I still recommend it though. I'm feeling a solid 7.5 out of 10, or an 8 out of 10 (a lower 8). Glad it's doing well at the box office. Check it out. Not exceptional, but still good!
