This book is not mean and not racist. The book depicts the racist attitude of some Southern people in the 1950's and how a young white male, who tells the story of his family and his experiences, begins to see prejudice, hate, ignorance, and bigotry as he grows up. It is sad. It is historical (I lived at that time and also observed similar happenings). It is a good book for anyone....BUT just because there are bigots in the book and they are quoted does not mean the book is racist!
