good enough. Through my first viewing I got very sick of the visuals, stories, and challenges. They felt really out of place and incredibly generic. Nothing felt connected which made me feel like I was watching a bunch of short clips that was supposed to have a main story like a Tv show. Some of the characters seemed pointless and if you took them out they probably wouldn't make a difference.
In my later viewings (My sister watches this movie all the time because she loves David Bowie) I began to get enveloped in this world that was created by this girls mind. Everything had a connection with each other and there was definitely some pretty amazing artistic design for the puppets and sets. Instead of feeling like I was watching different scenes I began to realize that every challenge was a lesson that the main character needed to learn such as don't take things for granted, Think about what truly matters, Toys are garbage compared to family, you can't assume your always right, Sometimes you have to do the things you don't want to do. There are tons more but I can't list them all. Everything fell into place. You can tell that the generic adventure feel-good movie aura around this film was intentional. They wanted to create a simple story with some lessons learned along the way and the way they executed that idea, for the time it was made was absolutely mind blowing. All of the traps, puzzles, illusions, and character choices were believable, Original, artistic, and very iconic. David Bowie was the highlight, All of his songs achieved their intention whether it to be mysteriously romantic, Disorienting and disturbing, or fun and catchy. Every David Bowie addition to the musical delivers.
However there is one scene that makes no sense, doesn't add anything to the plot, and looks terrible. Yeah I'm talking about the dancing dragon/bird mutations. She just stumbles into a forest where these weird animals start pouring in and sing what's definitely the worst song in the movie. They start flinging their heads around and generated a very unwanted feeling, like it was meant to be fun, but ended up being disturbing and horribly done to a very unintentional level. it is so obvious that there is a green screen behind them that it hurts your eyes to watch because it looks like they were edited in on a bad Photoshop level. The worst part is that there was no lesson learned in this scene. and it felt so out of place that if you cut the entire scene from the movie, it would make no difference in fact it would make the movie BETTER.
That's the only complaint I have about this movie, otherwise a very iconic addition to the film industry. it's not like anything you've ever seen before. A very unique and iconic film to watch on Halloween with your family! :)
