Powerful on many levels! Story...awesome! It’s about time we had a Nam flick that featured black vets. My poor southern town was gutted as the boys in my generation got drafted, got killed or got lost in drugs if they did come home.
Surprising...In parts, almost like Deliverance as a group of buddies head into the jungle for a good cause. Retrieving a lost buddy and a fortune in gold are admirable causes. Several plot twists. You know the crazy one is gonna cause trouble, don’t you?
Delroy Linda has the chops to play a vet who has kept the ghosts of Nam in heart and soul long after his 3 tours of duty. Chadwick Bozeman has less screen time, but his presence guides everybody’s actions throughout. Thank God, Da Bloods really do show why they survived Nam the first time, and have a trick or two up their sleeves. Da Bloods lead a fresh generation in battle, in surviving, in shoring up the communities that these African American fathers and veterans fought and survived to represent. Unlike Rambo, these veteran brothers, fathers and grandfathers remind us that leadership is a joint effort, real men do cry and make loving sacrifices for their children.
Veterans, Americans of all wars and ethnicities will take lessons from this intense and engaging return to Vietnam Nam. Well done, Spike Lee!
