It is a masterpiece of literature. It it the story of a man who was from such a poor family that he had to steal bread so they could survive for one more day, and that this man was not a bad person. In fact, Jean Valjean is nearly a superhero. It's a story told over the course of many years, but not for the sake of length; Les Miserables only seeks to tell a deep story of human triumph. Written in the mid-1800s, it is surpisingly modern.
