Torchwood takes place in the same world as Doctor Who but raises the question what happens when the doctor cant come to save the day? However where the Sarah Jane adventures does this in a kid friendly way comes out guns blazing (sometimes literally.)
The show is broken up into 4 season of varying quality as listed below
Series 1: not terrible has some serious Growing pains and relies a bit too heavily on call backs to Doctor Who but there is a charm to it especially the first episode
Series 2: By far some of the best adult oriented SCI-FI to date, as well as with the character development we get and the set up of Jack and Ianto coming closer despite Ianto being borderline an outsider in the previous season and jack running to go be apart of the Doctor Who season 3 finally.
Series 3: Children of Earth is a masterpiece hands down the best and most tragic series of Torchwood, the Villain is truly one of the most evil we have seen in doctor who's worlds and the appearance of Peter Capaldi before his run as the doctor makes this a master class of acting
Series 4: Miracle Day is better than series 1 of Torchwood and posses an interesting question about immortality but the season runs on for far too long and the jump over to America makes this one a bit too bloated to call "really good" but on the whole one I do NOT regret watching. The Cliff hangar ending does not makes this one easy to recommend because it never gets resolved (not even by big finish)
