This game is a huge letdown, I don’t understand the praise at all.
The positives are the graphics, cinematic set pieces and story. The overall story is solid, Clive and his main crew get solid character development, have realistic dialog between one another and it isn’t fill with corny ugh, uh, oh, aww, and um Vocalized pauses like in kingdom heart 3.
The negatives will be a much longer list unfortunately.
The main world is lifeless (you might say, well it’s supposed to be) but even in the story context it’s still bland and unimaginative. FF16 doesn’t have that WOW factor in lvl design. It’s all rocky plains or deserts with abandoned houses and the occasional patch of trees(but not a forest or woods). All blocked in by landscape you can traverse or climb. For more context for what I mean, this game doesn’t have a sense of mystery and wonder. Let’s take elden ring for example. When you discover Nokstella, the Eternal City you get a sense of wonder and cant wait to discover all this area has to offer. Ex: 2, Nier automata, when you enter the amusement park for the first time. It delivers with its music and visuals a magical place and makes you want to explore. Ex:3 dead space, a sense of doom and the uncertainty of what dangers are lurking in the dark. FF16 doesn’t evoke these emotions. What set pieces it does have aren’t explorable, the Caste at the end, linear, can’t explore not one side room, no puzzles, traps, or wrong turns to take. Even the cities are bland, nothing to do in any of them. No minigames or places to explore within the cities. No secrets side missions to find, nothing.
Speaking of side missions, they suck, 80% of them are fetch quest and the stories for 80% of the side quest are the same story. Ex: 80% will be bearers have it bad and are treated like property and thing vs as living breathing humans. Which was fine at first, I liked seeing how bad the kingdoms were but after 40 missions it got old, was essentially beating a dead horse. Only fun side content are hunts, and but the combat makes those a walk in the park
Yep, the combat is way too simple and repetitive. It doesn’t really matter how you mix and match your eikon abilities, the combat will always be the same formula. Attack with eikon abilities till you stagger the monster, then unleash a barrage of power attacks while it lays there helpless. Most enemies will die after 1 stagger, bosses will survive but you just dodge and keep spamming eikon attacks while spamming square while you wait for them to cooldown and stagger them again. Only hard combat is the optional chronolith trials. That is only hard because it has a time limit and preset abilities and sadly the rewards aren’t worth the hassle.
The enemy variety is lackluster. Maybe 20 different enemies and most of those are just variants. When you reach the last island of the game, it’s a bummer to see the same enemies on the map. Just all the enemies you have ever fought but in one place. The hunts would have been more fun if they weren’t just the same monsters you’ve seen during the story but on steroids. No big secret boss fight that FF is known for.
I thought this was going to be FF return to form, but it is far from it. SquareEnix has yet to make a legit FF game. They continue to take Squaresoft IP and run it in the ground. If you don’t believe me, then think about how the only good FF games that have been released are remakes or remasters of Squaresoft games. SquareEnix is on the same level as Disney, surviving off remakes and the legacy of better creators from the past.
