This movie is absolutely amazing, and I'm going to explain. why it's amazing. While I also address some of the common themes, I see in the 1-2 star ratings
1. I see a lot of people complaining about how many songs there were, when it's literally a musical. Why watch a musical, and complain about a lot of it's run time being musical numbers? If you don't like musicals, don't watch them, leaving bad reviews because you didn't expect a musical, to be a musical doesn't help anybody. I've also seen some people say the songs are just "whining", when what they're "whining" about is emotional & mental abuse, from the pressure Abuela Alma put on the family, which is a very valid thing to complain about. These people lived their whole lives serving the community, and only started complaining after the pressure was literally breaking them. I'd say that's okay
2. People saying "it's not deep enough", when it's also labeled as a comedy, that is it being a comedy/musical is it's 2 labels. So it doesn't make sense to expect it to be deep. Even then it's still really deep, it's just more about how generational trauma effects the family, and self discovery. That is a very deep subject, and many of the plot points, are very deep, as are most of the songs, which are often about emotional pain & trauma. A few songs are more fun, than deep, which adds to it being a comedy, especially the song at the beginning. The movie was amazing at showing just how badly the pressure from Alma, and the community hurt the family. One guy left the family out of guilt, when he literally didn't so anything wrong, people just didn't like his gift, is that's not deep I don't know what is
3. I've seen people complain it wasn't an adventure movie movie, and people saying the trailer made it out to be one. As well as the fact that most of what was happening, was happening in the house, when again they expected an adventure. Which wasn't actually shown in tbe trailer, since pretty much all of the scenes shown in the trailer were in the house, and a few clips from Luisa's musical number. It's unfortunate some people's false assumptions from the trailer ruined it for them, but it really wasn't set up as an big adventure movie. It was set up as a movie about a family, and their house/magic, so I'm hoping people who haven't seen it, and see this review will now know this. Hopefully you guys will be able to see it for what it is, and enjoy it
4. I've seen people complain there was too many women, in the cast, and no men having big parts in it. Which to me is an odd thing to be bothered by, especially when there's endless movies centered around male characters, with very few female characters (that are side characters, with very little character development). This movie gave a variety of female characters with well developed personalities, and storylines, which are shown a lot in the songs. The male characters in it are also good side characters, have decent development, and support the women in their lives. Which is a pretty positive portrayal of men, so I really don't see what the problem is, especially since a Disney movie being about a lot of well developed female characters are super rare. It's progress, we should be happy about that
That is all I want to address at this time. Hope this review helps people see the movie for what it's supposed to be, and judge it based on that. Since so many missed the whole point of the movie, and everything it was about, while judging it. So please give the movie a chance, and judge it based on what it actually is, not just a lack of knowledge of what the movie is. Hope you enjoy it
