Itaewon Class has been around for a couple of months now on Netflix and I avoided it like the plague because I felt so annoyed about the number of K-Dramas in that website. But having no other else to watch, I tried one episode last night until I found myself eager to watch another and another. I am currently on episode 11 and the night is still young.
I found that it is not your common K-Drama with the usual David VS Goliath plot. It also tackled LGBTQ issues with a DanBam pub staff who is a transgender woman. Itaewon Class also featured a black actor playing a New Guinean character in search of his father and societal acceptance in South Korea.
It is truly refreshing to see a courageous K-Drama series that aims to encourage its viewers to challenge societal norms that are not working anymore in an ancient but wealthy country. Racism and sexism still very much exists in South Korea, which is detrimental to a location that draws in people from all over the world, ranging from different walks of life.
Finding myself invested in such a refreshing K-Drama storyline, I'm hoping that it is not just a way to attract viewers, but also a sincere attempt to open the eyes of its local viewers. I'm giving it full stars all the way because it is engaging as it is entertaining.
