Imagine falling in love with your best friend and as time goes by you grow apart and one day you hang out with that person after twelve years and you create a special connection with them after vandalizing some areas. The next day your best friend that you vandalized with the night before disappears. Would you go looking for that person? That’s basically Paper Towns. This story was created by John Green also the creator of Fault in Our Stars, so Greens work is known for the romantic scenes. But, in Paper Towns it was totally off. There was no kiss scene, no deep bond between the nerd and the popular girl is was lacking a lot of the romantic aspect of the story. I expected the same or more effort that was put in Fault in Our Stars when I saw Paper Towns, but I was disappointed. I don’t recommend this movie at all the storyline was unrealistic because the main characters just wouldn’t talk to each other.
Paper towns is revolved around high school seniors and the important night of their lives, Prom. The main character is a nerd who is shy and isolated from outside school activities, but he has two nerd companions. The main character fell in love with his best friend when they were kids but have grown apart. His best friend is the most popular girl in school and his next-door neighbor one night they hang out and the next she runs away mid of their last semester, and he goes out to look for her only to be disappointed.
Paper towns describes the importance of friendship. The main character Quentin has two best friends in high school Marcos and Ben. In the film they are around a lot and are important to the character. They hang out all the time and they are so close that Marcos and Ben go out of their way to help Quentin find his girl. This shows the intensity and their valued friendship. The film captures it clearly which hits you emotional since friends like those are hard to find.
As this film revolves around high school and their senior this film starts typical and very boring after 30 min it and later it becomes even harder to watch since the storyline is unrealistic. The story is based on the novel Paper towns which is a romantic book but, in this film, it’s more of an uninterested mystery. The novel is lacking action, interaction between the nerd and popular girl and the most important of all the romance. There was one kiss scene that was unpassionate and that didn’t tie the story together at all. One night they interact for the first time after twelve years and go out and vandalize people’s homes as revenge. That night many of the victims saw the runaway minivan leaving the scene, but no one bothers to do anything shouldn’t they be in jail? A critic from Rogereber website says, “what kind of parents wouldn’t call the cops when their home is vandalized or grow suspicious when their SUV suddenly screeches out of the driveway?” this thought makes the film unrealistic for sure in the real world they kids would be in jail. The conflict was that the girl runway after meeting her once the audience doesn’t have an emotion towards the character making the film unenjoyable and a pathetic story.
