I've loved the Outlander series, but I would never have read on had this volume been the first. In nearly every way, the book disappoints. It failed to build upon the surprise return of Bree and Roger satisfactorily. No converging action or event brought the book together. It has little plot, except for people wandering bere and there unwisely in a time of war and danger. New characters of little merit were given far too much attention, while the characters we love showed no character development. William, who we want to love, comes off as shallow and incoherent. And the editing was abysmal: errors, inconsistencies, and nonsence abounded. I wondered if Gabaldon even read the finished product! This book added nothing to the story. It was a terrible disappointment in a long awaited volume.
