This is one of my favourite Pixar films. The main reason is before watching it I heard it that the movie might be Pixar's first ever film with gay protagonists. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case but the film as an allegory for the issues that come with discovering you're gay was overwhelming apparent.
The allure of a different life to how you've been raised, the overprotective parents that worry for your safety, the prejudice from people who don't understand, keeping a secret from everyone, finding your chosen family and finally embracing your true self are all issues that resonate with queer people and are expressed beautifully in this film.
I knew I was gay around Luca's age but didn't come out for years later as I feared other people weren't ready to accept me for who I was. If I had seen this film when I was younger I really don't think I would have forced myself to fit in and hide my feminine traits to make people who didn't even care for me feel more comfortable. I can only hope this film will do the same for others.
