I'll admit, I wasn't expecting this show. Bored and searching shows on Netflix when this crossed my path and thought "Ricky Gervais, time for some laughs". There were laughs, but not the belly ache laugh I expected, but the mournful smile and exhale of breath that comes with heart wrenching pain. This show beautifully shows the pain that someone, in this case a Tony (Ricky Gervais), goes through after losing the love of his life.
His acting is easily the reason this show is great. His mournful teary eyed quotes just hit the heart so perfectly and don't come off as campy or forced, I had to see that his real life wife is indeed still alive because it came off so believable.
Unlike most shows I marathon on Netflix, this one wasn't because it was exciting, or action packed, or even with a "just one more episode, can't leave it on a cliff-hanger", but because I wanted to see more of Tony. When I'd turn off the show, I felt somber, alone, sad, and while you never want a show to make you feel that way, this one works.
