Sorry but I don't agree with all these reviews that said how fantastic this book is. I liked it; the author is undoubtedly a good story teller but hey, we know he is a surgeon, I get that, but enough of the detailed description of each procedure, operation and agonizing birth, really not necessary and quite boring. Also annoying how he saves various characters, only to have them killed off or having them die later on. And Elsie getting leprosy, come on!!! I guess the author had to figure out a way for her to have a good reason for disappearing and not taking the kid, but it felt so contrived and even cruel. The book reminded me a bit of A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, one of my favorite books, so this a compliment, but Seth's book is better by a long shot. Still, like I said, I enjoyed this book.
