Hard Hitting Movie about the Ugly Truth of a MAJORITY of Indian Kitchens (and homes, and families)
Even if you try to wrap your head around the atrocities that this girl undergoes, if you are a woman from any average Hindu middle class family you will realize how very close this movie hits home.
To varying degrees what is shown in the GIK is repeated in EVERY home.. the kitchen and home are the responsibilities of the woman, there is NO joint responsibility here, if a woman choses to work, she must do so doubling her work and responsibilities at home which will be waiting for her at the end of the hard day. A mother in law often will expect that her son should relax, and that the daughter in law should adjust! no expectations are made on men from day 1, but daughters are trained to handle everything,
There is one scene that is poignant, when the bride returns home and throws the glass and shouts why her brother cannot fetch his own water.. she realizes that this is what happens to some degree in her home too but she never realized the implications earlier. It is a must watch for WOMEN all over, watch and weep and wake up and stop being SLAVES, demand for equal work at home too... we had to fight for equal right at work, now fight that the men do their share at home, very few, very very very few do their share or realize what this means. Most men take it as their birthright to loll around. We ALL personally face exactly this (to a much milder degree - but its the SAME IN each aspect ) at home its an uphill struggle daily to educate the prince spoilt by his mother and sisters and whom WE married AND Choose to remain married to.
The fault lies with the women for accepting and allowing it further. The fault lies with our own mothers, sisters and aunts who told us this was okay, and that we have to learn to survive and manage like this. Because everyone is scared of Divorce and feel that this issue is not strong enough to be discussed - it is correct the matter is a question of deep rooted patriarchy. It needs to end.
