I can understand the evil character of Lucy Mason but had a difficult time accepting the way that Alice Shipley’s character was developed. I was very bothered by how the author allowed the reader to see that Alice understood what Lucy was doing and yet her behavior was that of someone who was completely naive and stupid. I had a difficult time reconciling all this and was left with a very unsettled feeling at the end of the story.
