For me more than mystery, the way people suddenly commenting on larger life is very moving. Even in last para, it says "careerism is depressing thing", or earlier detective realizes no one has noticed his absence really....it's like Tokyo Story , life sucks moment...train timings, 4 minutes etc are not needed for story to work....Hitchcick never was like this btw....disguised as cyanide suicides once made homicides palatable in Japan sounds strange to my Indian ears...first question came to my mind was what was the source of highly restricted chemical cynaide even in 1957 and how that was not investigated....is it because of WW2 cycnaide capsule or something?....also noticeable is how fast Japan was Japan like after the war, trains ran on time, Ginza was buzzing, corruption was rampant...I felt complete absence of God, religion, spirituality...book is slim alright but so soon after such a destructive war, Japan was like a Western nation, consumeristic....very puzzling for me
