I loved the book and loved the movie. Though the movie didn’t go into all the details of the book - I thought the message was clear. This is a memoir for how life was for JD, and those who grew up with him. Only one story of poverty. I was inspired and it was relatable.
If you read the book- and even watch the movie closely another huge take home point is no matter how far you leave your childhood, your roots will always be a part of you. He wasn’t exposing poverty he was sharing how it shaped him.
JD and his wife moved closer to his mom to be apart of her life... even after the horrible way he was raised. Just because he wanted more for his life than where he came from shouldn’t be discouraged.
It’s a shame reading the critics reviews... I doubt any of them know what it’s like growing up in poverty, and the struggle to get out and break the cycle.
