Ok, I read this book Nov-Dec of 2019. Though the author was former military the main character is a civilian. I suspect this was done so the story is more approachable than if the protagonist was some kind of gung-ho rambo type. It described a fairly prescient scenario. A virulent influenza surges through Indonesia and spreads globally. There is WHO and CDC foot-dragging. The scene is a small, isolated neighborhood in Maine. Some people are prepared and some are in denial. This plot follows a common "prepper porn" scenario whereby neighbors and refugees from the big cities become desperate as first grocers, then medical facilities, utilities, and law enforcement breakdown. It's not a Mad Max Apocalypse scenario but the third act does take the protagonist to a life-or-death encounter that few people are prepared to tackle. This is not a hide in the woods from society story. Many people will relate to the suburban setting in this book. I'm glad I read this book. I do recommend this book but for many people who haven't read it...it's really too late.
