This film was a disgusting excuse for a live-action adaptation and almost ruined the original Mulan for me. Disney was simply trying to milk money from its Asian viewers but upon closer viewing, many scenes from the movie were simply inaccurate and used for the aesthetic. Liu Yi Fei was also a horrible choice for Mulan as she was portrayed in both the original and stories as feisty and eccentric, the embodiment of fire. Liu Yi Fei did anything but that, with her stiff acting, and her altogether aura, Disney put the original Mulan to shame by appointing her.
The thing that angers me most about this film is the fact that Disney missed the whole point of the original story of Mulan. The old story of Mulan involves an ordinary girl dressing up as a man to go to war in place of her father. A completely normal rural teenager sacrificing herself for her family because of how much she loves them. Mulan was never supposed to be special with her "Chi". She was supposed to return home after surviving the war because all she wanted from the beginning was to save her family.
Growing up in a completely Chinese household, I have never heard anyone use the term "Chi" absolutely anywhere and it bothered me throughout the movie. Plus all this honor talk was extremely gross to witness. Miss gorl was starting to sound like Zuko from ATLA.
As a Chinese-American, I was utterly and wholly appalled at Disney's pathetic remake of Mulan. The whole time I was watching this film I was cringing to the max. They absolutely massacred the legacy of the original tale for money and clout from Asian countries.
